WINTER IN THE LUNGAU

Winter in the Lungau brings the snow and turns the region into a beautiful white winter wonderland.  Our mountainous valley is a natural host for all types of winter sports and attractions; the Lungau is well known for is extensive skiing and snowboarding possibilities.  However, if you can tear yourself away from the slopes long enough there is so much more to do and experience at this time of year.

Interactive Map of the Lungau

The Lungau Tourist Offices provide a really good Interactive Map depicting an overview of the Valley.  There you can see the locations of various attractions including Alm Huts, Churches, Museums and Wild Life Parks.  There are detailed maps of Walking Routes and Hiking Trails, Bus Stops, Web Cams and lift stations. You can zoom in using the tool on the top left hand side of the page.

Ski & Snowboard

With over 300km of slopes and snow until late spring, the Lungau offers great skiing and snowboarding opportunities for the whole family.

Cross Country Skiing

There are over 150km of Cross Country Ski trails available in the Lungau, offering much variety to the avid Langlaufer.

Skating (on skis) is becoming an increasing popular winter pastime and the Lungau boasts around 100km of skating trails for the ambitious skater to try.

Winter Walking and Hiking

Winter Walking and Hiking is an excellent way to experience the peace and the beauty that is the Lungau Valley in the winter.  Walking routes are well signed and maps are available from the Tourist Offices.  Some of the Town and Mountain Lift websites provide good descriptions and further ideas too - have a look at St Michael / English

A number of Outdoor Centres and some of the Ski Schools offer guided tours.  Contact Sport Friedrich  / English in St Michael, Haradal Sports in Mauterndorf and Fresch:up in Aineck and Katschberg.

Nordic Walking

Nordic Walking ( English ) was originally developed in Finland as a method of summer training for top athletes.  It has grown swiftly in popularity since it's first introduction with many dedicated trails and schools now located across Europe.  It is said to be very easy to learn, using a similar method to that of Cross Country Skiing, and able to be performed with different techniques at varying levels of intensity.  Nordic Walking is also well promoted for those with back and knee problems.

There are a number of Nordic Walking trails across the Lungau, including St Michael / English Mariapfarr have a great website with details about their 119km of alpine walks.  Further information can be found at the Local Tourist Offices

Snow Shoe Walking Tours

Walking in snow shoes is easy to learn and fun to do, allowing you to explore places that would otherwise be difficult.  A number of the outdoor centres offer guided tours and moonlit Snow Shoe Walks..

Ski & Golf

Between March and season end in April there is an option to buy a combination Golf and Ski pass.  For around 40 Euros you can ski until 1pm and spend the rest of the afternoon on the green.

Snow Bikes

For something a bit different try out a snow bike, they are well promoted as easy to ride...

Tobogganing

There are numerous sledging locations (Rodelbahnen) throughout the Lungau.

The PeterBründl lift in St Michael is our closest offering sledging hire and night time tobogganing with floodlit runs.

Ice Skating and Curling

Ice Skating and Curling are two wonderful ways to enjoy the frozen winter conditions.  St Michael offers both at the town's Sportplatz.

Horse Riding

Pony Trekking and Horse Riding are not just summer activities in the Lungau, there is plenty of equestrian fun available during the winter months too.

Horse Drawn Sleigh

A Horse Drawn Sleigh ride is a wonderful and relaxing way to see some more of the natural Lungau.  Snuggled warm under a heavy blanket whilst being driven expertly through the winter white scenery.  Day and Evening trips are available by agreement with pick up directly from your chosen location.

Mountain Huts and Culinary Delights

There are numerous small, privately owned huts located throughout the Lungau mountains.  The food is home made and delicious and served in healthy measures.  Warm up your cold hands and feet by an open fire and sample some of the hot soups and potato dishes on offer.  Main Alm Huts in St Michael / English

Child Care

There are two main child care providers in our immediate region.  Not to be confused with Ski School these groups provide trained carers and teachers, offering activities including drawing, painting, crafts, games, sleigh rides, sledging, snowman building and snowball fights.  Naturally the activities available will depend upon the age of the child involved.

The Kinderstube in St Margarethen is located directly on the Aineck Lift Station, visit www.aineck.at for more information.

The Smarty Mini Club is for children over 18 months old.  They are based in Mauterndorf, visit www.smarty.at / English

Wellness and Recreation Centers

Die BadeINSEL / English can be found in Tamsweg, and provides holiday fun for the whole family in any weather.  Attractions include an 80 metre long black hole waterslide, indoor and outdoor swimming pools - yes outdoor even in the winter!  (temperature of 31° C), massage tables, water shoots, Sauna, Steam Rooms and Restaurant.

The Samsunn Wellness Center / English is located in Mariapfarr.  It boasts a 1700m2 Spa with Restaurant, Sauna, Whirlpool, Physiotherapy, Massage and a host of Alternative Therapies.

In the Silver Mine at Ramingstein you can visit a Respiratory Centre.  This therapy is recommended for all who want to be healthy, but focuses on those suffering from Asthma, Allergies, Heart Complaints and Stress.  Treatment is based on methods of speleotherapy (dark treatment therapy) and is provided by expert therapists.

A Hay Bath is a natural alpine treatment that stimulates the bloodstream and relaxes the body.  For generations the medicinal properties of the grasses grown in the Lungau have been used in this way.  It is said to be good for Rheumatic complaints and can help to boost the immune system.

Quad Bikes

Quad Bike hire is available at Göriach.

Quads can be hired by the hour or by the day, licence and age restrictions apply.

Paragliding

Experience the winter paradise from above with St Michael's Paragliding team.  Tandem Paragliding flights take off from Aineck and Speiereck mountains and circle the towns of St Margarethen and St Michael respectively.  Bookings can be made directly at the main office in St Michael town centre.  Contact:

Winter Driving Skills and Training

For driving enthusiasts St Michael  has it's own Driving Skills Centre and dedicated driving track, offering unforgettable days out where you can learn some winter driving skills.

Museums, Castles, Churches & Attractions

If you want to absorb the history and witness some incredibly beautiful architecture, the Lungau will not disappoint.  Our region has no less than 4 Castles, numerous Pilgrimage churches, Museums and Fortresses.  Each town has it's own attractions.

As you may expect many attractions only open between June and September.  However the local Tourist Offices have been known to promote winter opening times too, usually between December and March.  For more accurate information, check with the local Tourist Office or contact the sites directly.  Not all attractions are represented on the internet, however where websites are available we have included them on our LINKS page.

Art, Culture, Festivals and Events

The Lungau is host to numerous annual festivals and events.  There is everything to experience including Concerts, Special Film Screenings, Painting and Sculpture, Culinary Delights and Traditional celebrations.

Wild Life Park

Visit the animals at Wildpark Schlögelberger, over 1300m above sea level over looking the beautiful town of St Margarathen.

Christmas

 

Christmas is a magical time in the Lungau. The town is covered in snow, lights and decorations adorn the shops and buildings and the valley is filled with festive preparation and seasonal exhibitions and activities.

Christmas in Austria is all about family.  Christmas Eve (Heiligabend) is the main day and the time when we exchange our gifts.

The Christmas Advent Market

December brings the Christmas Advent Market.  The Market usually begins the first weekend of the month, continuing each weekend until Christmas.

The Adventmarkt is host to numerous stalls with hand made crafts, culinary delights and confectionary.

There are musical performances, cultural celebrations, story telling, craft demonstrations and of course the famous theatrical Krampuslauf through the streets of town.

New Year

New Year is a much bigger and louder celebration than Christmas with singing, dancing and fireworks over the mountains lasting into the early hours of New Years Day, don't plan on getting much sleep!
