THE LUNGAU and SANKT MICHAEL

The Mountains of the Lungau

The Lungau Valley can be found in the Southernmost region of Salzburg.  The Valley is wide and surrounded by a chain of mountains through which the clouds cannot easily pass.  It is for this reason that the Lungau has earned the reputation for being both the sunniest and the coldest place in Austria.

The people of the Lungau have a very balanced attitude to life in general.  They work hard and are proud of their homes and their land, but they put equally as much effort into relaxing and enjoying leisure time.  It is a very friendly place to be.

The mountainous landscape makes the Lungau Valley ideal for pursuing any number of winter and summer sports and activities.  Whilst the rich history and culture of the many Villages, Towns and surrounding Cities provides equal appeal.

Best of all, although there are many attractions here in the Lungau one of it's most attractive qualities is that our area is developing at a natural pace and so far, resists the mass tourism that has enveloped many of our other beautiful regions.

The charming and peaceful town of St Michael is nestled in the heart of the Lungau Valley.  The town's official promotional slogan is, "Sankt Michael im Lungau, Da bin ich gern!"  which quite literally means, "Saint Michael in the Lungau, there I am happy!".  Walking through it's cobbled streets with spell binding mountainous views all around it is not hard to believe...

St Michael has a lot to offer all year round.  The town is host to a variety of restaurants, bars and bistros with a wide spectrum of shops, crafts and gift stores.  Click here to view a copy of our town plan - Haus Bellevue is located on grid E5 (number 373).

Their official website provides some fabulous panoramic views of the town square and other attractions.  Have a look at:

www.sankt-michael.at

Enter the main site and follow the link for "Virtuelles St. Michael" at the top of the page.  Depending upon your Internet speed the page may take a while to load, but be patient - it is worth the wait.

Swimming Pools at Sankt MichaelIn the summer you can relax in the sizeable outdoor swimming pool(s), play mini golf or table tennis.  For more active pursuits, St Michael provides an excellent base for hiking, cycling and mountain biking.  We even have our own Paragliding school in the town centre and a first class Golf course only minutes away.  There is Horse Riding, Rafting, Tennis and Fishing.  You could visit the incredible Wellness Centre a short drive away in Mariapfarr, have fun at the massive Waterpark in Tamsweg or absorb the history and culture in Mauterndorf's incredible castle.

Mauterndorf CastleThese sites and attractions are also available in the winter, however the Winter months bring the snow and turn our town and Valley into a glittering paradise, opening up further opportunities for recreation.

Nursery Slope on SpeiereckThe Lungauer Skiwelt has more than 300km of slopes ranging from 1100 to over 2400m in height and with conditions and runs to suit every Skier, Snowboarder and Cross Country enthusiast.  The Valley is snow sure, with skiing from late November to early May in some parts.  In Sankt Michael there is chair access to the Grosseck and Speiereck runs which in turn, join up and over the Grosseck mountain where you can ski down towards Mauterndorf.  Across the road from Sankt Michael by way of car or free ski bus is the famous Slalom course Petersbründl, also ideal for beginners and families with small children.  Further on and you can find the massive ski area of Katschberg, Aineck and Tschanneck with three connected mountain peaks and countless different runs.  If this isn't enough you can journey a short way out to the very popular area of Fanningberg and huge region of Obertauern.

Cross Country Skiing

As well as down hill skiing and snowboarding there is over 150km of cross country skiing with tracks up to 2000m above sea level and many options for Cross Country Skating.

Tabogganing

Then of course there is Ice Skating, Curling, Taboggoning, Romantic Winter Walks or if you prefer, more adventurous Mountain Treks and Snow Shoeing Tours.  There is opportunity to take in the scenery with a Sleigh Ride or to hire a snow bike or quad bike.  Or you can simply sit in one of the many traditional mountain huts and soak up the atmosphere with an ice cold Beer or warming glass of Gluhwein.

To complete the attraction Sankt Michael is host to numerous cultural, sporting and musical events all year round.  You can find these detailed at the TVB (Tourismusverband) website:

www.sanktmichael.eu

For coming events look at "Veranstaltungen & Tradition".  Alternatively click here for an English translation.  The site also offers a variety of downloadable brochures (all in German), look under "Infos & Service, Download Prospekte"
