CYCLING, E-BIKES and MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDING

The Lungau is a Mountain Bike and Cycling paradise with everything on offer for the casual cyclist to the ambitious mountain biker.  The huge network of clearly marked paths can take you on a leisurely bike ride alongside brooks and forests and through the beautiful countryside, or to greater elevation along one of the thrilling Mountain Routes that are guaranteed to get your heart racing.

The Mur bike path is particularly popular with families and stretches in total 365km along the second largest river in Austria!  Not just for die-hard tourers, the route is accessible from many points - only minutes from the accommodation - and is made up of gentle gradients, tarmac and stone paths.

For the more adventurous Biker, the Lungau features 15 Mountain Bike Tours totaling 560km in all!  All trails are well signed and offer varying levels of difficulty.  For an overview click HERE, or have a look at the fabulous Interactive Map of the Valley which details each route including starting and ending points, maximum height and level of difficulty.  The same map will also indicate whether or not there are refreshment stops along the way...

If you don't like going up, but love the thrill of traveling FAST down the mountainside, take advantage of Mauterndorf's Cable Car.  The 8 Person cab will take you and your bike up the Speiereck/Grosseck Mountain Peaks where you can enjoy the various routes and paths at high elevation before commencing your descent....

.... or hire a "Skyver" scooter.  These foldable scooters resemble a bicycle without a seat and are lightweight in design for easy carrying in a specially made rucksack.  Whatever way you choose to ascend, a Skyver can ensure that return journey is a lot of fun - be prepared for white knuckles!

E-Bikes are growing very quickly in popularity.  These electric powered bicycles open up the whole mountain region, making even the more difficult routes accessible to all.  Bikes can be hired locally, with charging stations positioned at regular intervals throughout the Valley.  Guided tours with hire included are also available.   There are a few Websites dedicated to the Lungau Electro Drive.  Click HERE / English for more information:

Another notable advantage for Bikers in the Lungau, is the readiness of local Bus services, Trains and Mountain Lifts to transport you and your bike, opening up the possibilities for exploration and 2 wheeled fun for everyone.

Mountain Bikes, Road Bikes and E-Bikes can be hired from a number of outlets throughout the Valley including Sport Friedrich and RestSport in St Michael, Smarty Sports in Mauterndorf and Sport Sampl in St Margarethen.  In addition to hire, Sport Haradal in Mauterndorf and Biosphären Adventures in St Michael also offer guided tours and are happy to provide free advice on where to go!
